I contacted Kathleen via her Facebook page to ask if she would be able to shorten my daughters prom dress. We arranged a convenient time and I went to Kathleen's home with my daughter. Kathleen was very abrupt with my daughter, but I let this go. She told me that she would cut the front of the dress to the correct length and would put a stitch in each side and at the back to keep the 4 layers together.

I asked Kathleen how much it would cost but she said she was not able to give me a price and told me she would let me know once she had made the alterations. At no point during my initial messages and whilst at her home did she mention a consultation fee of £15. I asked if she needed paying and she said no I was to pay when I collected the dress.

Kathleen contacted me a few days later to say that the dress was ready to be collected. I asked if my daughter needed to try the dress on and she said no. I went and collected the dress and paid the £45 she requested.

Once home my daughter put her dress on and immediately noticed that the bottom of the dress, where Kathleen had cut was a jaggered cut and was not straight. We then also noticed that the cotton used to put stitches in the side and back was a completely different colour to the dress and that the stitches were loose - they were not holding the 4 layers of dress together. Also where the dress had been cut, the side seems had not been restricted which meant the bottom of one of the layers was coming undone.

I messaged Kathleen to say I was upset and disappointed as I had trusted her with my daughters prom dress and that it wasn't right. Over numerous messages Kathleen told me to take the fees back, I stated that I didn't trust her to do anything else to the dress and that the work should have been completed right the first time. I said that I wanted a refund, to which she said that she wouldn't do anything unless she saw my daughter in the dress.

I went to Kathleen's House the next day with the dress and without my daughter and showed her what was wrong, to which she replied up in my face, "don't you ever have a bad day!" To which I replied was I expected to pay for her bad day. Kathleen then told me that the reason the stitches were loose was because she needed to do it whilst my daughter was wearing the dress - which I pointed out that at no point had Kathleen told me this, even when I asked if my daughter needed to try the dress on.

I said that I didn't feel £45 was a fair price for what she had done and that I would now have to pay someone else to rectify her mistakes. She then told me that I should think myself lucky as she normally charges £15 consultation fee, which she has failed to inform me of during our messages and at my appointment.

I asked for half my money back, which is more than fair. She stormed off into her kitchen, slamming the door, then returned with the £22.50, which was slammed into my hand and she told me to get out her house.

I have since seen another lady, who stated she can't believe the mess that has been made of the dress.

Kathleen is a very rude lady, who has not once apologised for her mistakes. I would definitely not recommend her to anyone needing alterations.

Kathleen is a talented dressmaker. I have had a few things altered and you can't tell any work has been done. A new full length zip on my husbands jacket was replaced and its just perfect. Kathleen turns the work around very quickly and has very reasonable charges
