Trust me when you read this - use anyone but Merritts for your house sale/purchase. We’re so mentally exhausted from the experience that we can’t even bring ourselves to write a full review. In summary -

- Zero proactive communication: we didn’t hear from our solicitor for the first two weeks, and after that it took on average 3 emails before we got a reply. Many of our questions were unanswered.
- Professionalism: everyone at Merritts that we dealt with, seemed like they couldn’t get rid of you quickly enough. Replies bordered on rude, and despite multiple promises to have a call back from our solicitor ‘as a matter of urgency’, she claimed to have never been advised this.
- Had to do alot of the work ourselves to keep the process moving, including taking it upon ourselves to get our searches returned early, despite being told this wouldn’t be possible. This was made more difficult by the fact that we were given the wrong company name to chase.

Strongly advise looking for alternatives. Please read the other reviews of Merritts before considering using them.

Merritt a Solicitors helped through my Mortgage and for the completion of my auction house purchase. The completion had to be done within 56 days of agreement to buy. They did a fantastic job, even sorting out mistakes that had happened with my mortgage application.

I was recommended Merritts through the auction company I was using to sell my property. If you are recommended them then please save yourself the hassle and weeks of mental exhaustion. Getting a response is nigh on impossible, on average it took 3 emails to get one back, and the responses always made me feel like I was being annoying. I was never made to feel like my case mattered, in fact during one phonecall with the assistant (you won't get through to your solicitor unless you're stood under a rainbow), I was told she was busy dealing with urgent cases.... At the point of this message my completion had been delayed for 2 weeks.

During the process I had to send my solicitor £185 to pay for a sellers pack (leasehold), which I was told absolutely needed to be done urgently on that day. The next week, I was then asked to chase it and when I called the management company, they confirmed they had received the sum DAYS later but had not been given any instruction on what it was for?! So please explain why I was pressured into sending it because it was so urgent and it wasn't even utilized?

The day before our completion date, we were told there was a document that the buyers wanted clarification on. This was an auction property, so we were under contract and for this to be brought up the day before completion absolutely threw us into a sea of uncertainty.
It was left to be dragged out over 4 weeks, it was never treated as urgent and my mind was never put to rest.

I was under the impression my solicitor was sourcing the information the buyer needed but after 3 weeks I had had enough of being ignored and not trusting she was actively chasing anyone for it. I ended up trying to gather the clarification myself and managed to do so within a few hours.

We completed a month after our original completion date, and it was the most stressful month of my life, made even harder by the lack of communication and lack of care. I cannot explain how relieved I am to never have to deal with this company again, and reading through some of the other reviews on here it sounds like I'm not the only one.

Please avoid at all costs.
